For the 1925 International exhibition of modern decorative and industrial arts, René Lalique designed a fountain called Les Sources de France (The springs of France). It symbolised the springs, streams and rivers of rural France and featured a 15-metre high pyramidal element comprising 17 octagonal stages supporting 128 caryatids. There were16 different models measuring between 47 and 70 centimetres; most of them bore the names of nymphs and were associated with specific elements of nature such as fish, shells, water lilies and reeds.
