Throughout December, the Lalique Museum’s “Happy Cristal” exhibition will feature magical encounters between crystal and forest, a homage to the notion of a return to roots.
Without the resources of the forest, there would have been no glassmaking industry in France’s Northern Vosges region, where tradition was passed on from generation to generation thanks to the abundance of wood, sand from the rivers, and potassium from the ferns. From the fire fuelled by wood, matter emerged.
Happy Cristal features objects that have heard the call of the forest, which has brought them back to life. Pride of place goes of course to the fir tree, the King of Christmas. Witness the striking harmony between raw, natural materials and pure, bright objects, and the fairy-tale world they conjure up. A fir tree is suspended between time and space, dripping with crystal, while swans glide over an almost-frozen lake.
