René Lalique, from a drawing by Suzanne Lalique-Haviland
Model created in 1928
Mould-blown glass
Property of the Lalique Museum

Suzanne Lalique-Haviland’s drawing strives to represent the mysteries of the aquatic universe. The opaque quality of the glass used for this vase mirrors the opacity of the underwater world, where light struggles to penetrate.

The eye visualises the fish as a geometric frieze, giving the impression of an infinite number.

Penthièvre is the name of a stretch of coast east of the Côtes d’Armor region of Brittany, south of the town of Saint Brieuc. Hence the association with water and fish.

By the way: Suzanne Lalique-Haviland regularly produced drawings for her father, and her style is easily recognisable. She was particularly inspired by the geometric and stylised shapes typical of the Art Deco movement.
