Created in 1934

These glasses were designed by René Lalique and his daughter Suzanne Lalique-Haviland for the luxury apartments of the Normandie ocean liner. They bear the monogram CGT – Compagnie Générale Transatlantique – as do the plates produced by Théodore Haviland, also designed by Suzanne.

The Normandie, launched in 1935, was the epitome of the dream ship: it was not only the largest and fastest liner of its time, but also the image of absolute luxury and refinement. For the monumental dining room, whose dimensions exceeded those of the Galerie des Glaces in the Palace of Versailles, René Lalique designed elements worthy of the scale: two chandeliers, forty eight torchères (floor lamps) four metres high, twelve gigantic fire pots three metres high with a diameter of one metre fifty.
